The Resurgence of American Furniture - By Keith Joyce

The High Point Furniture Market has been more than interesting for the last couple of years.  High unemployment, bitter partisan politics and looming deficits dominating the news are NOT the best atmosphere for the world’s largest furniture trade show.  The question among industry insiders has, at times, been “Who – if anyone – will show up?” Last October’s market was surprisingly upbeat and well-attended, in spite of the daily buffet of bad news served up by the media.  I’m delighted to report that the April 2010 market was even better!

One thing that EVERYONE in the industry is talking about is the resurgence of American-made furniture.  Customers are walking into furniture stores and asking “Where was this made?” and in some cases absolutely refusing to consider imported furniture.  We really enjoyed having a Chinese couple in the store who said “We don’t want imports.  We want American furniture!”

At Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we do our very best to find quality American-made furniture for our customers. We’ve been fortunate to form alliances with a number of American manufacturers; one of which is Vaughan-Bassett.  Vaughan-Bassett knows the score – their factories are in Virginia and North Carolina and fed largely with lumber produced less than 100 miles away.  V-B plants multiple trees to replace every one that is logged. Importing only imports a handful of items out of the hundreds they produce helps keep American workers on the job and off the unemployment rolls.

Coming soon is Vaughan-Bassett’s latest introduction – solid oak and solid cherry furniture built right up the road from Bowen Town & Country Furniture.  It’s rolling out of the plants right now and will be on our showroom floor in the very near future… Solid wood furniture built with pride in the United States of America!
