Pick a chair…Any chair

Thursday, February 28th, 2019

bowen By BreeAnn Cook:

If only it were so easy as picking any chair, but you don’t need just any chair. You need a comfy chair, that doesn’t sacrifice on style, doesn’t take up too much space, doesn’t block the view in your open concept room, and it needs to be kid/dog/clumsy cousin friendly. We get it. You want a chair that
works for your room, your taste and your lifestyle. Well, great news…We’ve got a chair for that. Here’s a list of our favorite chairs and why they check all the boxes.

First up is the Malcom chair from C.R.Laine. If it’s high style you’re after, this chair will turn some heads in leather with a channeled back. We love it in a character leather like Brompton Brown, but for active families a protected leather like Spectrum Acorn is best. At only 30.5” wide, it’s a great fit for smaller spaces, and you can keep the conversation flowing in an open concept with the swivel version.

The Delta swivel rocker from Jessica Charles is on the top of our list for two reasons; its curved shape almost hugs you when sit in it, and the rocking motion will rock you right into a relaxing state. It’s available in several fabrics, including soft and cozy Crypton velvet that repels spills, while resisting stains and odors.

For the traditionalist, we recommend the Brooke chair from Robin Bruce. It has a classic English arm, and turned legs with casters for classic appeal. It comes standard with a down blend cushion that sits like a dream. Add an ottoman and you’ve got the perfect spot to kick back with a good book. Did we mention that Rowe/Robin Bruce has a large selection of Kid-Proof Fabrics?

Lastly, if you want an antique inspired feel, we like the Jenny chair from Kincaid that’s reminiscent of a Jenny Lind bed. You can really let your personality shine with a painted wood frame or keep it classic with a wood tone. Jenny looks great in a fun print, and for a family friendly option, consider Kinguard or Sunbrella fabrics.

We have a wide variety of chairs that are comfortable, stylish and family friendly available in our showroom located in Winston-Salem, NC. We hope that you will visit soon. We will help you find the right fit.

He says Recliner…She says NO!

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

bowenBy: BreeAnn Cook

Rarely a week goes by in the store that we don’t hear a husband and wife going back and forth over a recliner, or reclining sofa. He wants kick your feet up comfort; she wants something that looks, well, not like a recliner! It shouldn’t be so difficult to find a compromise, right? Truth be told, nothing beats the comfort of a good recliner. Mostly attributed to all that extra cushioning, which is probably why she is not so fond of the styling. We understand that you need the best of both worlds, comfort and style. So, here is our line up of great looking reclining furniture to help keep the peace in your household.

Perhaps the most stunning sofa made by Hancock & Moore is the Sundance sofa and it happens to be available as a reclining sofa.

Why do we love it? Besides being available in a ton of leather options, it has a one piece back cushion, a beautiful button detail on the outside back and absolutely does not look like a reclining sofa. We’re confident your wife will love the styling of this one.

But, if you need something a little more understated or maybe with more bells and whistles, we recommend the 450/451 series from Smith Brothers. The 450 reclining sofa has refined lines but still somewhat traditional styling with nail-head trim. With a one piece back and exposed wooden legs, it looks less like a reclining sofa and more like a stationary sofa. Of course, you can get with or without power recline. If your husband loves all things power thought, get the 451 with power articulating headrest which has a two piece back. The overall look it still quite tailored, and he gets the added
benefit of adjusting the headrest for better tv viewing, which is a nice compromise.

For a stand-alone recliner, we recommend the Haskins recliner by Bradington Young, or the 522 recliner from Smith Brothers.

With its single cushion back and exposed wooden legs, the Haskins looks more like a leather club chair than a recliner. In a rich chocolate brown leather and with simple panel arms, it’s at home in most décor styles. The 522 is a classic tufted back recliner that’s as big on style as it is on comfort. It’s available in a variety of fabrics or leather, in manual or power recline.

You should know, we are not marriage counselors, but we have negotiated a few compromises over the years. Because we don’t believe you should have to sacrifice style for comfort. Visit our showroom today to see all our reclining options, whether they look like it or not.

Revitalizing America…Ben and Erin Napier partner with Vaughan Bassett

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

By BreeAnn Cook:

If we’re going to be serious about revitalizing small town America, then we have to be serious about American manufacturing and the small towns that depend on it.”-Ben Napier

Ben Napier grew up in North Carolina and saw the hardships of small towns that lost their lively hood when furniture manufacturing moved overseas.  Together with his wife Erin, they embarked on a mission to revitalize the town that they call home, Laurel, Mississippi, and landed their own on show on HGTV called “Hometown”. After the show launched, they were approached by manufacturers to develop a furniture line, but all were overseas. Determined to partner with a domestic manufacturer, they found Vaughan Bassett. As the largest manufacturer of residential wood furniture in the United States, it was clear that they shared the same vision to grow and rebuild small town America by maintaining manufacturing here.

Together, they have created two beautiful collections, the Scotsman American Heirloom collection and the Laurel Home collection. Both draw  inspiration from antiques, and are built with quality materials and construction to last.

“To build furniture that lasts and becomes an heirloom passed down through generations – That’s the only kind of furniture we want to make.” -Erin Napier

Perhaps, the stand out piece from both collections is the Elder’s bench, designed by Ben as a nod to the early American church pew, and his childhood as a preacher’s son. The bench is unique, as it can be a stand-alone piece or can be attached to a bed as the footboard. It has two deep drawers for storage and is available in multiple finishes.

The Laurel Home collection is on display now in our Winston Salem showroom, and the Scotsman collection will be arriving mid-January.

Re-fresh your room in 5 minutes!!!

bowen furnitureBy BreeAnn Cook:

We all get tired of our décor from time to time, but re-decorating an entire room isn’t always an option. Fortunately, one of the quickest ways to  change the look of a room without changing the furniture is with a new area rug. The floor is often overlooked, but it can have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of a room. Here are a few reasons to change or add an area rug:

An area rug often dictates the color scheme, and can really date a room. By changing the rug, you can change the color scheme and quickly make the space more current. If your room feels a little boring, a new area rug can add pattern, color, texture and even a little personality. This also works great for all neutral rooms. Rugs can define an area especially in an open floor plan and they can even be layered on top of other rugs for a more casual feel. Best of all an area rug doesn’t have to be expensive.

Surya is a rug and accent company that offers a variety of rug types. They include everything from fine hand-knotted to tufted and machined made,  even indoor/outdoor options. Whether you are looking for an updated traditional option or a more modern look, you can find the right rug for your style. For a budget friendly choice, consider machine made or machine woven. It’s durable and comes in a variety of pattern options that won’t break the bank. Hand-tufted rugs can also be a good alternative to hand-knotted. For layering, add a fun, colorful rug on top of a sisal or jute rug. Don’t forget to use a rug pad to protect your floors, reduce slipping and prolong the life of rug.

We just received a great new shipment of area rugs and a new rug rack to help you with your selection. And if you are looking to make a few extra changes, Surya also offers accents like pillows, throws, lamps and art too. Visit our showroom today to find the perfect quick fix for your room.

Addressing the challenges on an open floor plan

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

bowen furnitureBy BreeAnn Cook:

Inspired by your favorite HGTV show, you grab the sledge hammer and take a swing. A short time later the wall is gone and now nothing stands between you and the view from your kitchen to your family room. Now what? We all love the idea of an open floor plan, but the reality is that it comes  with a few challenges. Let’s take a look at those issues and how to overcome them.

Without walls, placing your furniture can seem daunting. After all, they created boundaries and determined traffic patterns. Now you need to create these with furniture placement by floating it within the space. Start with your focal point and build around it, keeping in mind the function of the  space. If the focal point is the television, make sure that most of the seating has a good view. Then factor in the traffic patterns. Leave three feet for major traffic areas like exits routes or access to other rooms. Allow two feet for lesser used paths, like the entrance to a seating group. Complete the grouping by filling in the empty spaces with accent furnishings and additional seating. Perhaps a small accent chair near the fireplace that doesn’t face the tv, but does provide extra seating when entertaining. A console table behind the sofa makes a more attractive entrance to an open floor plan than the back of a sofa.

Another issue is determining where the living room ends and the dining room begins. With open floor plans the rooms are not clearly defined. Use  area rugs and traffic patterns to define the different spaces. Placing an area rug under the dining table and under the sofa grouping sends a visual cue that this is a different area. Use architectural features to guide you. Center the rug under a chandelier or in front of the fireplace, then place furnishing appropriately. Make sure that you leave some transition space between the areas. This will require thoughtful selection of adequately sized  furnishings. Over- scaled furniture can crowd the space and encroach on the adjacent area.

Lastly, without walls, where do you hang artwork? This is a common problem, especially if you remodeled and were hoping to reuse existing artwork. Think outside the box. Consider using smaller artwork in bookcases, or even hang it on the bookcase. This requires a little more finesse, but the effect is quite striking. Layer art when you do have wall space. Whether its on the mantle or collage styling on the wall with overlapping frames, layering  adds depth and interest. It allows you tell a story with your favorite collected pieces.

Whether you are remodeling or moving into a new home with an open floor plan these tips can be helpful with your space planning challenges. Also, visit our website and try our room planning tool, where you can experiment with the floor plan before ever swinging that hammer.

Introducing Spicher and Company…Vintage Vinyl Floorcloths and more

Thursday, October 25th, 2018

By BreeAnn Cook:

We are always looking for new and exciting products to offer our consumers, and we found something really cool at the Fall High Point Market this year. Spicher and Company is a US manufacturer specializing in vintage vinyl floorcloths and framed artwork.

They began as an artwork company creating framed prints inspired by Kolene Spicher’s original paintings. Drawing her inspiration from her favorite place, Nantucket, Kolene loves to paint ocean scenes, boats and quaint little homes, and is known for her quirky style. Kolene and her husband Marc employ talented graphic artists at Spicher and Co. who create prints full of personality to complement Kolene’s designs. They later expanded their offerings to include vintage vinyl floorcloths.

The floorcloths are made of phthalate free vinyl that is 1/16 ” thick, which means they will fit underneath most doorways. The material lays flat and has a certified non-slip surface, making them great for entry ways, mud rooms and laundry rooms, no rug pad required. They are also UV resistant for  up to three years so they can be used in covered outdoor spaces and sunrooms too.

What makes these floorcloths unique are their vintage look and bold patterns. Each pattern is designed to look distressed as if a found vintage piece of the past. They have a wide variety of designs and colors. The Classic collection offers patterns ranging from stripes and plaids to geometrics and  random patterns that remind you of Alice and Wonderland. Imagine these adding a statement to a foyer or kitchen. The Williamsburg collection, as the name suggests, is inspired by historical designs. Evoking the look of needle work or crewel, these would be at home in any traditional setting. If  you’re looking forsomething classic but neutral, consider the Artisanry or Norwegian wood collections, that mimic the look of inlaid wood and other intricate patterns. For a true statement piece, check out the Kolene Spicher collection.

We love that these products are fun, bursting with personality, practical and made in America. Visit our showroom today to get your vinyl floorcloth and learn about custom order art options.

What sets Smith Brothers furniture apart?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

smith brothersBy BreeAnn Cook:

Even though I’ve sold furniture for years and understand quality, there were a few stand out things during the factory tour that really set Smith Brothers apart.

Fabric vendors provide fabric performance ratings to manufacturers, but Smith Brothers has found it crucial to do their own in-house testing. They do not just take the mill’s word for it, they test each fabric added to their fabric offering for abrasion and durability. They rate it one through five, and if they find the fabric has significant abrasion or piling issues, it doesn’t make the cut. This also helps the company determine which fabrics are sturdy enough for use on recliners. In addition to abrasion testing, they also test for seam slippage using a weighted wheel which is dropped on either side of a seem over and over. After five hundred times, they check to see if the fabric shows pulling at the seams. If a fabric shows slippage, then they will reinforce the seams by adding a bead of glue along the seam line.

Smith Bros. uses a pre-engineered heavy gauge spring coil unit under each seat cushion, providing independent suspension for each person on a sofa. The front edge on the unit is bent upward, except where prohibited such as curved shapes. This provides extra support and durability at the front end of the cushion, a high stress point. What I did not realize is that the entire coil unit is dipped into a protective coating to prevent squeaking over time.
Seat cushions feature a 2.5 density Qualux foam that holds its resiliency better over time, and back cushions are filled with fiber blown into chambers to reduce settling and sagging.

Smith Brothers constantly reevaluates its products and processes to make sure they are producing the best quality product for the end consumer. It may not be the most cost-effective way to do business, but their dedication has paid off. By the end of this year they will complete a large expansion that will allow them to ramp up production, including an ample staging area to streamline the shipping process. Speaking of shipping, did I mention that they deliver to our warehouse on their own trucks? These are custom built trucks with special shelving, so they never ship a sofa on end potentially damaging the arms.

Smith Brothers produces quality from start to finish. The workers take pride in making it, which makes us proud to sell it, and will make you proud to own it. Visit our Winston Salem showroom today to see and experience the difference for yourself.

Understanding Live Edge

Wednesday, September 5th, 2018

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook

Chances are you’ve seen a live edge table or counter, whether it was featured on your favorite HGTV show or in the tasting room of a downtown  brewery. They offer a wow factor with their unique characteristics and ability to work in most design aesthetics. But, what exactly is a live edge.

Typically, when lumber is milled, the edges are cut off each side of the log to create a flat edge, leaving a cube that is then sliced into boards. Live edge is a term used to describe a slab of wood that has been cut without removing the bark or natural edge. The result is a rough and raw edge that’s pure and stunning. In some cases, the bark is removed with a drawknife, leaving a smoother more kid-friendly edging. The beauty of using live edge slabs for furniture is that each piece is unique. As the tree is sliced through, each layer will be different, with varying shape, grain, knots etc… Every piece is unlike the next, making it one of a kind and a true piece of art. Some manufacturers will allow you to select a slab from an online gallery of inventory. Keep in mind that the final color will vary from what you see online, as the wood will darken when finish or shellac is applied.

Natural slabs are beautiful for larger items like dining tables, but they are limited by size. A standard dining table is forty-two inches wide, where a live edge slab table could vary in width, based on the shape of the tree. It may be thirty-four inches wide on one end and forty inches wide on the other. Finding mature trees with ample width for a solid slab dining table can be challenging, making them rarer and more desirable. Slabs of this size are too wide for most planners, requiring labor intensive hand planning; which means they can also be more expensive. For these reasons, manufacturers will often create tops by piecing together two narrower pieces of lumber from the same tree using joinery techniques. Book matching the grain pattern will make it appear as if it is one continuous piece.

Live edge can be used for a variety of furnishings such as dining tables, coffee or end tables, consoles and even bookcases. Would species could be  cherry, oak, maple, beech, or even walnut. Due to popularity in recent years, the term “live edge” is being used more loosely to describe pre-formed or  shaped edge tables that are manufactured and not truly a live edge. These options, while less unique, are more affordable.

Whether your looking for a show stopping masterpiece or a more budget friendly look alike, we can help you find a live edge table to suit your style. Zimmerman Chair, Palettes by Winesburg, Fairfield Chair, and Coast to Coast Accents are a few of our vendors that offer live edge options. Check them out on our website or visit our showroom to see the many options available.
